Do they think differently Oh Yes!
Having worked for one of the biggest Advertising/Marketing companies in the world doing I.T. support where most employees used PC's in various company departments, then there is the creative department which is a whole different ball game.
The main difference ?I think is loyalty, if you gave somebody in the offices a Dell or HP PC or Laptop they invariably would not care what brand it was as long as it did what was required, this also extends to printers, USB sticks and other peripheral devices.
Some people may say I like Dell or Acer but without being able to qualify their answers, whereas if you speak to one of the guys in the studio about PC's they think that they are 'rubbish' and I would argue the point for PC's simply to gauge their reactions. I would point out compatibility, cheaper software and hardware, more choice, better standards etc. The replies would be that Apple are more simple to use and troubleshoot, higher quality hardware and software and I would be shown examples on the Apple even by the Crestive Director e.g.
- Look at this you can't do this on a PC
- This is easier to do than on a PC
- Look I can run MS Office on my Mac
- The layout on the desktop is simple and uncluttered
- They are easy to put on a network, much easier than PC's
- The quality of the graphics is much superior
Everyone in the creative department have the same views from the Director down they all have fierce loyalty and would never consider using a PC for themselves.
I would point out the superior attributes of PC's to the Creative Department which would always guarantee a strong reaction, and they would throw back the strengths of Apple Mac's in a tongue in cheeck kinda way, it was friendly banter but time and time again proved that there is a huge difference in attitude.
Apple Mac users are passionate about the tools that they use in the their work and are immensely proud of the Macs that they use and the results of their labour, Apple Mac users would never defect and who can blame them!
Here is an hypthothetical scenario.
A company decides to make some changes and cross train 2 employees, one a PC user and the other an Apple user.
The PC user is asked to learn to use the Apple Mac so that they can learn how to do a new role, the chances are the PC user would be apprehensive and would not look forward to the huge learning curve, but think Apple is cool I will give it a go I am sure I will get the hang of it in the end.
The Apple user is asked to start using PC's, the reaction could be I don't understand, I have not got a clue, I will never get it, everything is different, it's impossible, I don't want to cross train, I will look for another job rather than do this.
The PC user will give it a go, the Apple user will find any excuse not to learn PC's and will always think that Apple are superior and will not be willing to change.
These are my experiences would you agree or disagree?
